Music Morning Series

Music Morning Series, an exciting series of talks takes place once a month and introduce you to different music topics ranging from music history, musical shapes and forms, great music performers to the insider's view of music-making itself.

By attending these lectures you will learn useful information to appreciate a concert you go to, a CD you have at home or to take up an instrument you always wanted to. Also-you will also have the opportunity to ask questions about music that you have always wanted to ask!

In today's challenging times, music provides us with many-folded experiences. Music inspires us to greater achievements, reenergizes. Music gives us the possibility to visit another place or time. The history of music, the development of music forms and styles tell us so much more about people, cultures, societies and economies. The music melody, rhythm of a particular region communicates much more about the culture of that region or nation from which it comes from. Today we live in a period of change. Composers and musicians have throughout history been challenged to manage change in difficult times. How did they respond to the need for change and address change? What can you learn from music about how to manage change?

This year the music world is celebrating the birthday anniversaries of two great classic composers: Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann. These anniversaries are the inspiration for this spring cycle which will begin on March 20 with a lecture on Frédéric Chopin who was born 200 years ago on March 1st 1810. The cycle will continue with a lecture on a famous contemporary of Chopin and Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn (born a year earlier) and conclude with Schumann himself. As many concerts are given in their honor this year, I hope a deeper insight into their music and lives will help you understand and appreciate their music more.

In the three lectures we will not only talk about their music but also discuss their very colorful and exciting lives. Chopin, Schumann and Mendelssohn were stars of their time, they were the Beatles, Michael Jackson of the 19th century. We equally listen to their music today. Their music is used today at fashion shows, weddings, TV shows etc.

"We would just like to thank you for the wonderful talks. We have enjoyed them so much. Not only did we learn about the development of music over the ages but how world events affect the composition of music. And what better place to learn about music than in the beautiful Zofin Palace with the ghosts of Berlioz, Dvořák, Liszt, Smetana, Tchaikovsky and Wagner listening in!"
